Philip Mayers was born in Australia. He graduated with distinction from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, having studied piano with Max Olding, and went on to complete a post-graduate diploma at the Conservatorium's Opera School. The following three years were spent as a freelance musician throughout Australia and New Zealand, performing with various ensembles specialising in contemporary music such as Flederman and Australia Ensemble, at the same time maintaining close relationships with the state and national opera and ballet companies. In 1986 he won the piano prize in the national concerto competition "Young Performer of the Year" and a year later was awarded a grant by the Australia Council which enabled him to study lied and chamber-music with Phillip Moll in Berlin and take part in masterclasses with Dalton Baldwin and Geoffrey Parsons. Further studies with Zelma Bodzin in New York followed. Now based in Berlin, Philip Mayers is much in demand as a pianist, chamber music partner, accompanist and vocal coach, performing with Werner Hollweg, Karan Armstrong, Anna Prohaska, Albrecht Mayer and Sonia Wieder-Atherton. He has appeared at major festivals such as Montreux, Aldeburgh, Wratislavia Cantans (Poland), the London Proms Late Night series, Schleswig-Holstein, La Roque d'Anthéron, La Chaise-Dieu, the Berliner Festspiele and even, with his ensemble Blue Noise, the April Spring Festival in Pyongyang. Numerous radio and CD recordings attest to his versatility, including several prize-winning discs with RIAS-Kammerchor and Cappella Amsterdam for harmonia mundi, and with the Rundfunkchor Berlin for Coviello Classics. His interest in opera has continued and has resulted in engagements as Musical Director with companies such as the Berliner Kammeroper (most notably conducting the world premiere of Lera Auerbach’s a cappella opera "The Blind"), Opernfestival Schloss Rheinsberg, the Berlin Konzerthaus and, most recently, for Maerzmusik (Berliner Festspiele) and the Schwetzingen festival. He regularly coaches singers who are appearing at Bayreuth, Staatsoper Berlin, Cologne, Covent Garden, Paris Bastille, Bordeaux and numerous other leading houses. Philip Mayers is also increasingly known as a composer and arranger, not only in serious music but also in the world of cabaret and popular music. With the English cabaret singer Mary Carewe he has appeared throughout Britain, Australia and continental Europe, for example at the Paris Théatre du Chatelet, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Alicante Contemporary Music Festival and the Riga Wintermusic Festival, and recorded their recently released CD "Serious Cabaret" for Orchid Classics.
